I love shopping at thrift stores and yard sales to find old things people no longer have a use for. Last summer I purchased an old wine rack because I knew that I wanted to make a DIY Magazine Holder, but I wasn’t sure when (if ever) I would get around to working on it. Then NC saw it’s first snow, which resulted in my kiddos getting almost two full weeks off from school. The NC snow storm also resulted in my husband getting some much needed time off to paint the Lexi & Ann’s room and John Jr.’s room. We decided to go with a Little Mermaid theme for the girls, and John wanted a Pokemon room! All of that creativity was contagious, and I finally started working on some DIY projects of my own. With today’s post, I am joining other bloggers who are #BringingInnovation through creative uses for old “junk”!
Yesterday I completed three little projects that made a big impact on two rooms in our house. I made a DIY Magazine Holder for my bedroom, complete with a decorated vase to hold my pen collection, and I touched up an old kitchen chair for my daughter’s bedroom! I was a little addicted to spray paint this week, but I am so happy with how everything turned out. I love breathing new life into old things, don’t you?
DIY Magazine Holder Tutorial:
All you need is an old wine rack, some spray pain, and masking tape (if there are any spots on the wine rack you don’t want painted. Be sure to clean your wine rack before painting it because dust will show through the paint.
I decided to keep the little accents clear, so I covered them with masking tape. I was going to cover the round jewels, but they looked kind of gross, so I painted over them.
I painted this for probably 5 hours. I would go out, spray a coat, and then let it dry. I didn’t want the paint to run so I was very careful. Try to make sure you cover the entire wine rack both inside and outside with paint. This is pretty easy to do because you can just paint through the large holes.
I knew that I wanted to keep this DIY Magazine Holder by my bed, and that’s how I chose the colors. We haven’t painted the room yet, but when we do, my main colors are going to be Coral, Teal, and Navy! With that in mind I tried to consider what would make this magazine holder as functional as possible. I love to read and write when I go to bed and when I wake up so I always have journals, magazines, books, and pens on my nightstand. That’s when I had another bright idea! What if my magazine holder could also house my pens!!! Yes, I was that excited.
I was trying to think of what I already had lying around that I could use with my magazine holder, and that’s when I remembered my vase collection. I don’t get flowers often, but when I do, I always save the vase. I tested out a few before I found one that fit perfectly. So I decided that it would look awesome if I painted that as well.
I didn’t just want to paint the entire vase because I wanted it to scream, this was handmade. So I put masking tape on both ends leaving a lip on the top uncovered and a little of the bottom showing so I could paint those as well. When I got to the top I sprayed some around the lip and it went inside the vase, which I could have cleaned out, but it looked “Artsy” so I decided to keep it that way.
I sprayed the vase while I was spraying the magazine rack, and the chair (you’ll see below) so again, I took my time and sprayed it a little and then let it dry.
Now my ugly $1 wine rack is a beautiful Magazine Holder! What do you think?
I am in love with this, and now I’m even more excited to paint our room. Who knows, I may have it completely decorated before we even get the paint on the walls. Oh, and I’m looking for a new bedding set with those colors, so if you see one, please send it my way!
The final project for the day was my daughter’s chair. We got new kitchen chairs (which also need a makeover), so instead of tossing our old ones I stored them in case we needed them later. Then we scored some pretty awesome desks on Freecycle, so a need for those chairs was born! I still have to paint the chairs for the boys room, but this is what the chair looks like in Alexis and Anna’s room.

Now I just need to get my mom to sew a little cushion for it and we’ll be all set!
I was inspired by Energizer, they have just launched EcoAdvanced the world’s first batteries that are made with 4% recycled batteries! How cool is that? If you haven’t seen the commercial, you have to check it out! I’ll embed it below so you can watch it. I have to admit that this little boy makes way cooler projects than I did! 😉
I think it’s amazing that the Energizer EcoAdvanced is the first battery on the market to use recycled batteries and materials. I’m also impressed that these are Energizer’s longest-lasting alkaline ever, and plan to put that to the test. I went to Walmart and purchased these batteries from the Battery Center right near the registers. Judging by the look of the display, I wasn’t the only one who thought the EcoAdvanced batteries were a great idea!

We go through a ridiculous amount of batteries in our home. From Wii remotes to toys that never seem to stop draining battery life, we can use all the help we can get in the energy department! Thankfully these come in both AA and AAA because we use a good mixture of both. I probably use more AAA and the kids are the Kings and Queens of AA battery usage!
Just like Energizer I took something old and made it new again, and that’s something we can all be thankful for. Landfills are growing in size daily, and I don’t want to contribute any more than I have to.
What about you? What old things have you breathed new life into? I’d love to hear about them!
Maybe you need some extra cash for spray paint, or other items to make something old new again… If so, be sure to enter this awesome giveaway from Energizer and maybe you’ll get lucky and win a gift card!
