My grandmother passed away right after my oldest son was born. She was such a huge part of my life, and it has always been so hard talking to the kids about her, because they don’t know her. I don’t have many pictures of her, because she didn’t like having her picture taken, and those were the days before cell phones so we didn’t often have a camera handy.

Today my children were able to truly meet my grandmother for the first time. I recently had some of my old video tapes transferred to DVD using yesvideo, and I couldn’t wait to see what was on them. All of my videos were over 10 years old, and I had no clue what was on them, so it was a huge surprise to see my grandmother laughing, talking, and opening up Christmas presents.

It’s amazing the things you forget as time goes by. Hearing her talk, I just laughed and said “That was Nanny, that’s how she always talked!”. I am surprised that I had forgotten how her voice sounded, and the little things she would say, that made her who she was.

Sharing these memories and this woman with my children was an experience unlike any other. I was excited to see what would come back on those DVD’s, but I honestly had no clue it would mean so much to me to be able to watch them with my children. After watching them, I shared some clips on Facebook so the rest of my family could see them as well. They laughed, cried, sent me messages. It was a great way to bring the family back together. It inspired me to send off the rest of my videos and plan a reunion so we can all watch them and remember together.

Life is so short, and our memories will fail us. Pictures and videos, they last forever. I would encourage you to send in those old VHS tapes, film strips, and camcorder videos you have lying around the house. Get them transferred to DVD, so you can share your favorite memories with your children in a way that is real to them. I could talk about my Nanny all day long, but I feel like my children have a much better idea of who she was after seeing her for themselves.

Take a look at two of the trailers from my videos:

This one is of my Nanny and my family on my dad’s side.

This one is one that will haunt and embarrass me forever!
