Why You Shouldn’t Join A Gym In January

The pressure to join a gym when the new year roles around can be very powerful, but if you know you’re unlikely to make going to the gym a habit, you probably shouldn’t join. I have found that for some people, joining a gym is exactly the motivation they need to get in shape. For others, it will most likely end up being a waste of money. So if you have any doubts that you might not stick with it, this post is for you!

Why You Shouldn’t Join A Gym:

Eight years ago, I was overweight. After two kids and a lot of pregnancy weight gain, I was miserable. Unfortunately, that misery wasn’t enough to make me stick to the gym. You see, gyms only made me feel worse about my condition. I didn’t have awesome workout clothes like everyone else, I was uncomfortable at the gym, I didn’t know how to use the equipment, and it was a pain to even get to the gym. Because of these things, going to the gym actually backfired. It made me feel like I would never be able to get back in shape.

Then it happened. I decided to start running in place in my living room. I’m not even kidding! Every night I would watch TV for 30 minutes while running in place. After a few weeks of this I started using some VHS tapes I found at Ocean State Job Lot (oh the memories). I started with Denise Austin – Power Zone – The Ultimate Metabolism Boosting Workout 1-3 Version 2 and I was hooked.

Within months I was dropping weight like crazy. I also started to care more about what I was eating, so I started The Lord’s Table (a FREE online Christian course that helps you battle over-eating).

I ended up dropping about 35 pounds, and I have never been the same. Now, I love exercising and going to the gym, but the thing that seemed to work best for me was simply forming a habit. By working out at home, I was able to lose weight in the privacy of my own home, and I couldn’t make any excuses. I could wear whatever I wanted, breath as hard as I wanted, watch TV, and just be myself.

If you are like I was, you may want to work on building a habit at home, before joining a gym, and see where that takes you! If I could do it, I know you can too!
