I love a good Monte Cristo. This recipe is adapted from a Rachael Ray Magazine that featured this as a kids' recipe. I thought Ella would really like it. She just wanted a plain waffle. Go figure! I enjoyed my Monte Cristo Wafflewich though!
Instead of using regular bread, you just use two lightly toasted waffles.
This week Publix had Aunt Jemima waffles B1G1. Also, with the Target and Manufacturers coupons you may have printed previously, you could score the Oscar Mayer Lunch Meat for $1.50 each. Great deal.
Did you know that the Monte Cristo is an American version of a French sandwich? It literally used to be called the French Sandwich! This sandwich was made popular by a restaurant in Disneyland and then southerners took the idea home and made it our own! It was basically just a gloried grilled cheese with meat and it was deep fried but this version focuses on sweet over savory! Of course, we aren't deep frying these sandwiches today but it is definitely worth considering if you have the time.
I can see it now... Southern Mom visiting Disneyworld: "Oh heavens this sandwich is delightful, but you know what would make it even better? Tossing it in the deep fryer for a little extra crunch! " Seriously though, she was on to something because now we deep fry everything don't we?

Monte Cristo Wafflewiches Recipe:
I used Raspberry Jam, but any could be substituted. The original recipe called for apricot. Strawberry would be yummy. I'm not a huge fan of grape, so I'm not going to recommend that one 🙂
This is a great change-up for a Sunday morning breakfast. Oh, and look at the original recipe for a slightly different version made in a panini press. I didn't feel like getting mine out this morning, and I also like the egg around the original one.
Hope you like it!
Monte Cristo Wafflewiches Ingredients:
1 tablespoon raspberry jam
2 frozen multi-grain waffles (I used regular, they were on sale)
1 slice ham, turkey, and swiss cheese
1 egg + a splash of milk (would be enough to make 2)
1 teaspoon butter
powdered sugar, optional
maple syrup, optional
How To Make A Monte Cristo Wafflewiches:
1. Lightly toast waffles in a toaster.
2. Spread each side with the jam and sandwich the ham, turkey, and cheese between both slices.
3. Lightly scramble the egg and milk together in a shallow bowl.
4. Coat the whole sandwich with the egg mixture (just like you would for french toast).
5. Cook in a small skillet over medium heat in one teaspoon butter (you could also just use a good spray of Pam). Cook for 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cheese is melted.
6. Cut into squares and drizzle with powdered sugar and maple syrup.
Someone else mentioned that they grilled theirs on the panini press and then dunked them in maple syrup! Yummy!
Enjoy!

Monte Cristo sandwiches are one of my family's favorite. I think of myself as the queen of substitutions--but I never even considered using waffles. Thanks for the idea--sounds delicious!
