Investing In My Children Through Play

When I look back on my favorite memories with my children, they always revolve around play. When I sit down with the kids to play something amazing happens. My kids begin to open up and communicate with me. They ask me questions, they tell me what they are thinking, or stories they are reminded of while we play together. I also love watching movies with my children. Being a movie lover myself, watching movies with my children always leads to deep conversations about the film we’ve just watched. It is very similar to the discussions we have after reading an excellent book. It makes me feel good to know that I have passed this trait on to my children. To me movies, books, and play are all a form of art, a very personal form. When someone creates a movie or writes a book, they are sharing a story with you. Depending on your life and your background the way you interpret that story can be very different than the person sitting beside you. These post-movie conversations open my eyes to where my children are at in their lives and what is important to them. It also gives me a chance to share my beliefs and experiences with them. It is one of my favorite ways to bond.

We are all movie lovers, so we often share the same anticipation for new movie releases. This summer we all watched preview after the preview for the new Disney Channel movie Descendants. We searched YouTube for trailers, talked about our favorite princesses, and our least favorite villains. We tried to predict what the movie would be about and how it would end. Then the day we had been waiting for finally arrived. We were visiting my parents when we all gathered around the TV to watch the premiere. Everyone was excited (yes, even my 11 & 12-year-old boys). We were not disappointed! The movie, the music, the characters; they were everything we had been hoping for and the film led to some wonderful conversations about second chances, grace, and mercy. I knew it wouldn’t be long before I was shopping for Disney’s Descendants merchandise and earlier this week I found myself at Walmart doing just that.

What I didn’t expect to find was my daughter’s desire to shoot their short films. Don’t get me wrong; I know my girls have big imaginations, love to play with dolls, and never miss a chance to get in front of the camera. I just didn’t realize that after watching hours of doll videos on YouTube that they had a desire to create their shows.

I have always encouraged my children to try new things in hopes of uncovering the passion and talents they may possess. I am not afraid to let my girls take control of my camera and produce and create their productions. I just never anticipated the adorably funny videos that they would produce. I can’t wait to share these videos with my grandchildren one day.

When I headed to Walmart with my daughters, we picked up the Disney Descendants DVD, soundtrack, and two sets of Descendants dolls. I let the girls choose their favorites, so we ended up with Mal, Ben, Evie, and Carlos.

After we watched the movie again, had a Descendants dance party, and played with the dolls, the girls got to work on their videos. Today we are going to share those videos with you! Today you are invited to my daughters short film premier!

I hope you enjoy watching the videos my daughters created, and I would appreciate it if you could give them a little YouTube love. Over the past week, I have enjoyed spending time just playing with my daughters and witnessing their excitement as they saw their imaginations come to life on screen. It is so easy to forget how important it is for me to stop doing all of my “mom jobs” and just sit around and play with my kids. They won’t stay little forever, and I don’t want to look back and wish I would have played more. I want to invest in them on their terms now. It’s not about doing what I enjoy, but instead getting on their level and doing what they enjoy. It’s in their comfort zone that they will open up and communicate with me so if that means getting on the floor and playing with dolls then that’s what I’m going to do.

You can purchase these awesome dolls, Descendants DVD, and the soundtrack at Walmart.
