As a mom, it’s my job to teach my children how to make healthy choices now, that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. My kids probably know more about their bodies than most adults, and that is my goal. It is my job to educate them. I can’t make their choices for them once they leave my house, but I can make sure they have the education they need and help them form habits now that hopefully stick with them for the rest of their lives.
Healthy Habits: Get Outside & Camp
We love to take our kid’s camping. We started camping when our kids were babies. Camping is such a healthy activity. You get outside and get the fresh air your body needs, you get vitamin D from the sun, and you get exercise by going on hikes, fishing, swimming, playing games, you name it, camping is perfect for a healthy active lifestyle.
I sincerely hope that our children look back fondly on our camping days and want to relive moments like these with their children. I hope that even if camping isn’t their thing, our days of camping together will inspire them to find their own ways of being active as they move into adulthood.
It is so easy to sit inside on the computer all weekend, and we have weekends when we just veg out and do that, we are not perfect TRUST ME. We do try to keep our children active, and if your family is not into baseball or gymnastics or even camping, there are so many other ways you can get your kids excited about being active. The key is figuring out what works for your family.
Healthy Habits: You Are What You Eat
We don’t eat like everyone else, nope… we are THAT weird family. Yes, my kids would tell you I am “that mom.” That gluten-free, sugar-free, fun-free cookie-baking mom. The mom who can make a cake out of almond flour that everyone is excited to taste and then says “ugh that’s disgusting mom!”. Yes, I have finally figured out how to make some treats my kids enjoy, but my kids live a lifestyle that most children their age do not understand. They eat fat, yes, lots of fat! Their diet is SO different from other kids their age, but they understand their diet, and it’s worked for us. My son has lost a good amount of weight, and he loves seeing the progress! He can tell a difference in the way he feels when he’s on keto and when he’s not.
My children know and understand diabetes, pancreas, insulin, and sugar. They get it. They know how the body works and what makes their bodies function. It’s amazing how much information a child’s brain can soak up. They don’t always like living this lifestyle, and every once in a while they enjoy a non-keto food but they understand the damage those foods can do in excess, and they’ve seen that damage first hand. Will they always eat this way? I’m not sure, but they will always know how to eat well, and that’s the best I can do.
Healthy Habits: The Essentials They May Be Missing
One area that they feel like they get a treat in is the area of vitamins. I let them take Nature Made® KIDS FIRST® Multivitamin Gummies because honestly, they complain about everything else we’ve tried. With comments like “those other vitamins taste like throw-up”, I was reaching the end of my rope”. Sorry, I know it’s gross, but you know I’m all about keeping it real around here. My kids eat a very strict diet, but keeping it balanced can be hard to do. Some will eat the veggies I send to school, and some throw them away. I can watch the baby at home, but I can’t keep an eye on her at school. I know how she operates because sometimes she comes back and she’s forgotten to throw them out. With our diet there is no room for my children not to get their vitamins, they need them. I am pushing veggies on them all the time because they are essential to their development and knowing my youngest is tossing them in the trash drives me crazy.
But I can only do so much.
Thankfully, I can watch her like a hawk here at home, and I can ease my mind a little with Nature Made® KIDS FIRST® vitamins from Target.
My children take both multivitamin and vitamin C.
