Fun Ways To Stay Fit And Healthy This Summer

Summer is a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy healthy activities like walking, cycling, jogging and swimming. All of these will help keep you in good physical shape and are much more enjoyable accompanied by sunshine and blue skies.

The easiest way to kick start a healthy summer is to start to eliminate all those unhealthy habits we’ve picked up over the years, whether you enjoy a drink or two or three or a sneaky smoke every now and again cutting these out of your life will do wonders for your health. Many leading brands in wine, beer and cider now offer alcohol-free versions or their drinks, or if you’re looking to give up smoking why not try an e-cig? A harmless way to still get your nicotine fix, e-cigs release a flavored vapour to simulate the smoking experience, whether you just want to cut back, or quit smoking altogether, these gadgets are a great option. Pick a nice fruity option to really taste the summer!

Give your exercise a summer fruit boost

Get into the spirit of summer by using oranges in your fitness routine. The kids can join in too to make these fun workouts for all the family.

Warm up by taking an orange (or Satsumas for the kids) in each hand and do multiple stretches upwards. The oranges will add a little bit of resistance.

Try some crunches with an orange tucked under your chin. Start in a sitting position on the floor and lift shoulders and torso up slowly. Hold for five counts and then lower. Repeat 15-20 times.

Get underarms nicely toned holding two oranges in each hand while doing tricep (underarm) lifts. Starting from a seated position on a chair or bench, raise your arms behind you while bending forward to stretch and tone the tricep muscles. Repeat 10 – 15 times.

Once you’ve done your workout, you can then reward yourself by snacking on your delicious, vitamin-packed oranges.

Take good care of yourself in the summer sunshine

Remember to take care of yourself in the hotter weather while you’re exercising. Acute dehydration, sunburn, and sunstroke can be very unpleasant experiences, so follow these tips to stay on top form and comfortable:

Wear SPF sun protection and remember to re-apply periodically, especially if you’re spending time in the water.

Drink plenty of water or juice; you lose a lot of moisture in warm weather even when resting.

Wear a cap or hat when you’re outside to protect your head from the sun’s intensity.

Warm weather offers a great opportunity for you to exercise and relax out in the open air. Take the time to really enjoy your backyard or park with friends and family, you won’t regret it!
