Eating healthy during the holidays can be a challenge. It all starts with Halloween, and there’s no turning back until it’s time to make that dreaded New Year’s Resolution. For years, I have spent January through October meal planning, prepping, exercising, and watching what I eat, only to find myself in the same rut by October. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of yo-yo dieting, which is what you are doing if you go back and forth between healthy and unhealthy eating habits throughout the year.

This year I decided I would break the cycle. So far it’s going great, and I don’t plan on falling off the wagon anytime soon. As a matter of fact, I have a plan, and I’d like to share it with you. If you’re worried about the holidays or have already found yourself hiding in the laundry room with your kid’s orange pumpkin full of treats, this post is for you!

One of the biggest misconceptions about eating healthy is the price. Sure, eating all organic and healthier foods can seem pricey. You don’t see nearly as many coupons for fresh non-processed foods, but I promise you they do exist! Even without coupons you can still save money by shopping in places you may not expect to find healthy foods. For instance… did you know that Big Lots has a great selection of healthy groceries? Well, guess what, they do!

I had no idea that Big Lots had so many nutritious, keto-friendly food options!

Take a look at my most recent haul to Big Lots for healthy groceries:

Everything I bought from Big Lots is keto friendly. My husband started keto right before I went shopping, so I stocked up on Tuna for his lunches. I was also able to get a lot of my condiments as well as some snacks like pork rinds and almonds. Oh, and thanks to the unbeatable price on K-cups I no longer have to refill my reusable K-cup (which is very annoying first thing in the morning).

My staples for baking during the holidays include coconut flour, almond flour, flax meal, baking powder, and baking soda. I was surprised to find such a large selection of Bob’s Red Mill products at Big Lots. This is great for anyone who is gluten-free and awesome for keto’ers like me.

During the holidays, you need to be prepared to face down temptations. Just because you are living a healthy lifestyle, it doesn’t mean you can’t make your own homemade goodies for holiday parties and get-togethers. I recently prepared five different keto holiday cookie recipes that are low carb and delectable.

Today in the spirit of giving I am going to share one of my favorite recipes with you!

Low Carb Snickerdoodle Balls:

Ingredients:

4 Tbsp Butter
1 Large Egg
1 1/2 Cups Almond Flour
1/4 Cup Stevia &  1/8 Cup Stevia (in a small bowl)
6 Drops Liquid Stevia
1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Cream of Tartar
1/4 tsp Cinnamon (in the same small bowl with Stevia)

How To Make It:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350
  2. In a small bowl mix 1/8 cup of Stevia and 1/4 tsp of cinnamon and set aside.
  3. Mix all other ingredients in a mixing bowl until well combined.
  4. Roll dough into 12 balls and place on a greased baking sheet.
  5. Roll each ball of dough in the small bowl of sugar and cinnamon and coat evenly.
  6. Bake for 10-15 minutes (check with a toothpick). Then place Snickerdoodle Balls on a cooling rack to cool.

Here are a few more tips to keep you eating healthy during the holidays:

  • Stick to foods that are high in fat. That meat, nut, and cheese plate is a great way to nibble without gaining weight.
  • Avoid processed foods and pre-made sweets.
  • Drink plenty of water and stay well hydrated to avoid “false hunger”.
  • Bring your own food. No matter where the holidays take you, make sure you pack a little something to eat in case there are no healthy options available.
  • Remember your goals. Right them down daily if you need to, but don’t forget why you want to make the right choices this holiday season.
  • If you’re going to treat yourself to something you wouldn’t normally consider healthy, make it worth it. Don’t choose an Oreo as a cheat food. Choose something rich and delicious that you can’t usually eat, like Tiramisu or Creme Brule.

How do you plan to stay on track this holiday season?
